What is the Duram Cup?
The Duram Cup (Duram Acetabular Component is a monoblock cup) was marketed as a revolutionary hip implant device because it was made of cobal chromium alloy, which is made from a single piece of material. It is designed for use in combination with Zimmer's Metasul Metal-on-Metal Tribological Solution LDH (Large Diameter Heads). The device could be made thinner and more comfortable for the younger and more active patient.
Zimmer received FDA approval for the Duram Cup in 2006 for use during total hip replacement, or total hip arthroplasty. The Zimmer Duram Cup has been used in approximately 13,000 patients.
How is it defective?
Within the first two years the cup can develop radiolucent lines, migrate and in some instances it just pops free or fails to become fully seated.
The surgeon who brought these defects to light, Dr. Larry Dorr in Los Angeles reported these findings to the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He and his colleagues reported to have made ten revisions of implants out of 165 and has four more waiting as of July 24th, 2008. Dr. Dorr is a world renowned orthopedic surgeon and Director of the Dorr Institute for Arthritis Research and Education. His findings have been sent to the FDA for review.
