Avandia
Almost 21 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, a disease in which the body doesn't properly make or use the hormone insulin to convert blood sugar to energy, according the American Diabetes Association. Avandia, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, lowers blood sugar levels, which can cause complications including kidney and eye damage, by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin.
New findings were released on May 21, 2007 by the New England Journal of Medicine regarding the diabetes medication Avandia. Research has found that Avandia may raise a patient's chance of heart attack by as much as 43%. Avandia is the top-selling oral, type 2 diabetes drug. Researchers have also found a trend towards higher death rates as well.
Patients taking Avandia may also be at risk of developing a cardiovascular disease called primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH). While PPH is most commonly associated with a higher-than-normal blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, it has also been shown to be associated with the development of heart valve disease and/or heart valve defects.
As with any medication, do not stop taking Avandia without consulting with your doctor first.
