Hydroxycut
On May 1, 2009 the FDA issued a warning for consumers to stop using Hydroxycut products due to the risk of liver damage. The FDA only recently learned of the death of a 19 year old man after using Hydroxycut. In addition to the one reported death, 23 other reports of serious health problems and liver damage requiring a transplant have been reported to the FDA. Hydroxycut products had been recalled and Lovate, the manufacturer, has pulled all the weight loss and fat burning products from the shelves. Read more.

Heparin
The blood thinner drug Heparin made by Baxter International Inc. has caused severe side effects including a profound drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing and severe allergic reactions, and sometimes vomiting. This adverse reaction happens within a few seconds of the injection of the drug and can be fatal. The Heparin was contaminated at the Chinese manufacturing facilities and was recalled by the FDA in February, 2008. Read More...

Chantix
the drug prescribed to help people quit smoking, has been linked to more than 39 suicides. There have also been more than 400 reports of suicidal behavior. There have also been reports of depression and agitation as well. The FDA is stating it is increasingly likely that the link between Chantix and serious psychiatric complications exists. Indications are also pointing towards the drug worsening preexisting conditions of psychiatric illness. Read more.

Pain Pumps
In a recent article in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers identified the high-flow intra-articular pain pumps as a likely cause of Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chrondrolysis (PAGCL). This pump, which was designed to relieve pain, is delivering the exact opposite effect by destroying the shoulder cartilage causing even more pain, and ultimately requiring shoulder joint replacement surgery. Digitek
On April 28, 2008, Digitek, generic name Digoxin was subject of a recent nationwide recall by the FDA due to the possibility that some tablets contain twice the amount of Digoxin as approved by the FDA. This was a manufacturing error and was distributed by at least two companies. Read more…

MEDTRONIC'S SPRINT FIDELIS CARDIAC LEADS
Medtronic announced it was voluntarily suspending distribution of its Sprint Fidelis defibrillation leads because a small number of fractures have been detected. As a result of Medtronic's action, no more Sprint Fidelis leads will be sold or manufactured and any remaining product should be pulled from inventory and returned to the company. Patients who are implanted with this lead are encouraged to contact their physicians for further information. There are over 260,000 of these leads that have been implanted worldwide. Read More...

AVANDIA
New findings by the New England Journal of Medicine were released on May 21, 2007 regarding the drug Avandia. Avandia is the top-selling oral, type 2 diabetes treatment manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. Research has found that it may raise a patient's chance of having a heart attack and/or increased risk of developing primary pulmonary hypertension. Read More...
